Why you can’t install cPanel on Windows Server

Published: 24 September 2024 • 4 min read

When it comes to creating and managing a website, there are quite a few options that you can choose from in terms of servers and management tools. Ranging from VPS and VDS servers to shared hosting, each option can come with a variety of operating systems.

With its intuitive user interface and its popularity, Windows Server seems to have become the go-to choice for most users that are not familiar with Linux, steadily growing in popularity with each year.

On the other hand, in order to manage a website, you need something more than just a server with an operating system - a control panel. cPanel is the most popular control panel software, having been around for ages. With its very well-defined nature and interface, it allows for easy website and server management, making it also a great option for those who are not that familiar with the world of hosting and website setup.

Since both Windows Server and cPanel are very beginner-friendly, the common expectation would be that if combined, people can have a very simple, intuitive and trouble-free hosting experience, right?

Well, that’s not the case. As a matter of fact, cPanel and Windows Server are not compatible. This is why it is crucial that you plan ahead and don’t just go and purchase a license for both Windows Server and cPanel only to find out that they don’t work together.

And while there are some workarounds to make them join forces, these methods are not always reliable and can cause even more problems than giving you solutions. This is why you’d be better off choosing a cPanel alternative if you still want to use Windows as your operating system.

cPanel & Windows Server are not compatible

cPanel and Windows Server are not compatible. As we already mentioned, this might come as a surprise seeing as how both the control panel and the operating system are quite popular on the market. The thing is that while powerful, both of them have a different technical architecture, which is why it is fundamentally impossible for both to run together.

cPanel is built upon Linux

In order to understand the differences between cPanel and Windows Server, it is important to take a look at their structural foundations.

cPanel, at its core, is built upon Linux - it utilizes the Linux kernel to gain access to different functionalities and hardware as well as the resource management system of your server. Not only that, but cPanel also utilizes a combination of software, commonly referred to as the LAMP stack, which features Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP. These technologies all act as building blocks for any web hosting venture, providing the basics needed for your server and website to run smoothly.

But how is that a problem? Well, Windows Server utilizes a proprietary kernel and its own software ecosystem, meaning that cPanel is simply not capable of working within that environment.

Licensing Issues

Another big problem which comes when trying to combine the control panel and the operating system is the fact that both cPanel and Windows Server come with their own license. Since cPanel is a commercially licensed product, it has its own set of requirements regarding the different operating systems that exist on the market and whether or not they can utilize cPanel. However, Windows Server is not one of those operating systems, meaning that you can’t run cPanel on a Windows-based server.

So, what do you do then? There are 2 options, you either go for a cPanel alternative that supports Windows Server or you try to use an emulator in order to get cPanel running on your Windows VPS, although this is not recommended as it can lead to security issues.

Suitable control panels for Windows Server

While there aren’t that many alternatives to cPanel that can run on Windows Server, there are still a few that can get the job done, providing the same functionalities.

Plesk Obsidian

Our first suggestion is Plesk Obsidian. It is a commercially licensed control panel, similar to cPanel. It utilizes a user-friendly interface, quite identical to that of cPanel. It also comes with a range of different tools for website management such as domain, file and email control, security features and application management capabilities, allowing you to utilize CMS software like WordPress or Joomla.

It also comes with a bunch of different licensing tiers, allowing you to get a single license or a multi-domain one.

Webmin

Another suggestion would be Webmin. In comparison to cPanel, Webmin utilizes a modular approach when presenting its user interface, allowing for a much more flexible user experience. Similarly to Plesk, there are also plenty of features including user management, file sharing, email services and database management.

Another benefit is that Webmin is an open-source project, meaning that it’s completely free. However, it does have a slightly steeper learning curve in comparison to Plesk.
